Dirt Time in Kananaskis, October 2007

Decided to head up to the Kananaskis area of the Rockies last week. A beautiful part of the world. Myself, my friend Dianne, and Tom and Emily (new instructors) were able to stay at a line shack for a pittance.

The Upper and Lower Kananaskis lakes were formed in 1955 when Transalta Utilities built a series of earth dams to channel water into their hydro stations. Some great fishing is had in these lakes, and the scenery is breathtaking. To get to the lakes, we decided to follow the main waterline from the powerplant up to the main dam, this is a good walk of about four kilometers. The only problem is that the pipe is an older wood one, banded with metal cables, and loves to spray upon people who dare walk along it. The day was crisp, but sunny, and some of the places nearby were quite interesting.

and some just tried to buffalo us

...One thing that bothered us was the practice of tying cord around trees to support the debris hut.  Okay if you remove it, but the cords had grown into the trees over the past few years (we estimated three or four).

This will cut off the tree's nutrients, killing it....so please, remove the damn strings when leaving!!  Aside from that, a great time was had by all.
