Wilderness First Aid

This two and a half day course has been designed to take up where normal first aid ends...what to do when there is no ambulance or doctor...

Topics covered include:

  • Emergency First Aid techniques

  • Remote wound care

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) wilderness guidelines

  • Medical emergencies and long term casualty care

  • Hypothermia and frostbite

  • Hyperthermia

  • Basic gastrointestinal problems

  • Basic emergency shelter and fire

  • Camp Hygiene

  • Emergency signalling and evacuation

  • Improvised splints and bandages

  • Advanced Body Survey techniques

  • Animal awareness and injuries

  • Stings, Bites, and Plant Encounters

  • Trip preparation and wilderness first aid planning

Hands-on practical sessions, readings, and lectures combine with an outdoor environment to effectively introduce the unique challenges of casualty care in the wilderness. This course is a must for outdoor counsellors, hikers, hunters, and anyone involved in remote areas.

Student will receive an introductory package beforehand containing a what to bring list. All participants receive reference guide ( actual classes will be visual and hands on), selected specialty items, and a familiarity with the processes involved in dealing with wilderness emergencies. Basic meals are provided, all accommodations will be tent or shelter. If you wish to bring a trailer or an RV for your use please advise us.

As this is an outdoor course, the minimum age will be sixteen years (16), however the minimum may be waived in order to accommodate Scouts, Guides, and other youth groups. A waiver will have to be agreed upon and signed by each participant. No wildlife will be harmed during the Animal Awareness or Stings, Bites, and Plant Encounters sessions.

Wilderness mini courses of approximately one and a half hours duration are also available for youth groups. These focus upon selected skills, and are offered at $15.00 per student. Contact us for details.

Remote Areas Emergency Medicine and Survival will accept no responsibility or liability for any injuries or losses due to improper behaviour. This is a wilderness area, and various wildlife should not be approached!!

The instructors for this course are experienced in both First Aid and Wilderness techniques, bringing with them a minimum of twenty years experience. Some classes may be modified as they progress due to the unpredictability of nature and weather.
